10 Questions to Discuss with Your Family After They Have Seen The Scarlet Pimpernel

September 27, 2023   |   Abigail Pierce

Have you been thinking of bringing your family to see The Scarlet Pimpernel?

Here at The Logos Theatre, we want you to be equipped to think deeply on every story we present to you. The messages and themes in The Scarlet Pimpernel can be an excellent springboard into some important conversations with your family and friends, and we hope this range of discussion questions will act as a tool as you seek to delve deeper into the story. Each of these questions is merely meant to spark that conversation and may be worked through in clusters or over time. As we say in the show, “A spark is all it takes to light a burning flame…”.

1. What does it mean to be a hero?

2. Which characters in The Scarlet Pimpernel would you call “heroic”? Why?

3. In Matthew 7:20, the Bible gives us an important principle “Wherefore by your fruits ye shall know them.” We can know the content of a person’s character by the actions they take in their lives. How does Percy’s actions reveal his character? What about Marguerite and Armand?

4. What fruit exists in your life? If someone were to look at your life and actions, what would they think about you?

5. What were some of the flaws of characters like Percy and Marguerite? How did these flaws affect their actions in the story?

6. What were some of the strengths of Percy and Marguerite? How can you develop some of those same strengths in your own life?

7. Marguerite and Percy find themselves in a difficult place in their relationship because of the secrets that they keep from one another. Marguerite even sings that she is ready to let their love die. But by the end of the story the truth is known and their relationship is mended. Read John 8:31-32; Ephesians 4:25, 29; and Proverbs 12:22. What do these passages reveal to us about the cost of dishonesty in our interactions with the world and the people closest to us?

8. We see in the production how much bloodshed and destruction was justified by the revolutionaries in the name of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. In today’s culture, we see a similar situation in Cancel Culture, where people’s livelihoods and place in society can be threatened because of political correctness, and unproven accusations all in the name of tolerance, acceptance, and social justice. What should be your mindset as a believer when the current climate can make speaking the truth a dangerous thing?

9. One theme of The Scarlet Pimpernel is self-sacrifice and duty. Although Percy would like to forget everything he has seen, and live a life free of care with his wife, he chooses instead to sacrifice his happiness and save as many people as he can. What examples of self-sacrifice do you see in your own life? How do others sacrifice for you, and how do you sacrifice for others?

10. Truth, Honour, Fidelity is the battle cry for the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. We see them live out these ideals throughout the show as they continually put themselves in harm’s way to protect the innocent, stand against evil, and serve each other faithfully. What are some ways you can live out these ideals in your everyday life?

It is our prayer that The Scarlet Pimpernel can be more than just a show to you. Our goal is to inspire you to live according to the ideals of Truth, Honour, and Fidelity and challenge every audience member to be willing to reach out in love to those who disagree with them instead of silencing them. It seems as though our world is growing darker every day, but stories like the Scarlet Pimpernel remind us that even one person can make a difference and shine a light, even if it seems they are standing alone.
